Hoover Dam by Helicopter from Las Vegas: Brief, and on the Way

Travel Analysts
We read 1,182 TripAdvisor reviews of three Las Vegas helicopter operators; 196 mention Hoover Dam. For most of them the dam is a sight on the way: 176 of the 196 also mention the Grand Canyon. Reviewers see it from the air, and some say the view is brief and depends on which side of the aircraft they sat. Of the 196, 187 are at four or five stars.
Explore the full guide & expert tips ➜Most Hoover Dam flights are Grand Canyon flights
The dam sits between Las Vegas and the western end of the Grand Canyon, and that is how most reviewers meet it: out of the window on the way to the canyon. Of the 196 reviews that mention Hoover Dam, 176 also mention the canyon, 128 mention a landing or a picnic, and 76 mention Lake Mead.
“You fly over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead on the way there -- but most of the experience is about the beauty of the Grand Canyon.”
— TripAdvisor, 5 stars, September 2025
| Of the 196 reviews that mention Hoover Dam… | Share |
|---|---|
| 🏜️ Also mention the Grand Canyon | 89.8% |
| 🥂 Mention a landing or a picnic | 65.3% |
| 🎙️ Mention the pilot's commentary | 41.8% |
| 🌊 Mention Lake Mead | 38.8% |
| 💺 Mention a front seat | 14.3% |
Reviews that mention the dam are, overwhelmingly, good reviews: 187 of the 196 are at four or five stars, and only 7 are at one or two.
The trade-off: if the dam is the reason you are flying, a canyon flight gives you a few minutes of it on a longer, more expensive day. If the canyon is the reason, the dam comes along at no extra cost.
The view is brief, and the side matters
Only 7 of the 196 are at one or two stars, too few for a rate. Two of them say they barely saw the dam, and both put it down to where they sat: on the far side, or in the middle of the back row.
“Was seated on the wrong side for the Hoover Dam.”
— TripAdvisor, 2 stars, August 2025
“I got a view of the Hoover Dam for all of 10 seconds and never saw the Rim Walk which our lacklustre pilot said was “coming up”.”
— TripAdvisor, 2 stars, July 2025
Reviews that mention the dam also mention a front seat more often than the sample as a whole: 14.3% of the 196, against 8.8% of all 1,182. Some reviewers describe pilots who rotate seats so everyone gets a turn at the front.
“Christian made sure we all rotated so that everyone had a sit in the front seats.”
— TripAdvisor, 5 stars, October 2025
“The view of the Hoover Dam is brief and so sit on the left had side (in the rear) or front on the way out if possible.”
— TripAdvisor, 5 stars, August 2025
That last tip is one passenger's flight; routes change with wind and traffic, and seats are assigned by weight. How that works is in our article on helicopter seats.
The trade-off: a paid front seat is the only way to remove the side from the equation, and reviewers say it is not guaranteed, because the weight of the other passengers decides it. If the dam is your main reason, ask at check-in which side it will pass on.
The short Hoover Dam and Strip flight
A smaller group of reviews describes a separate product: a short flight over the dam and the Strip, without the canyon. Reviewers who took it describe it this way.
“We did the Hoover Dam/Strip ride which was 35mins - perfect my 6yo son!”
— TripAdvisor, 5 stars, March 2026
“Hoover Dam and strip flyover was around 30mins flight and for my wife that was enough.”
— TripAdvisor, 5 stars, June 2025
The low ratings for this flight are about the same things as any short flight: a cancellation close to departure and, in summer, the heat.
“We understand that Las Vegas is very hot during the summer, but the temperature inside the helicopter was unbearable.”
— TripAdvisor, 1 star, July 2026
Flight length and route are set by the operator and printed on the listing; what reviewers report is their own flight. Why short flights get cancelled is covered in our article on cancellations.
The trade-off: the short flight puts the dam at the center instead of on the way, and it is short. If you want to stand on the dam rather than look down at it, that is a ground tour, compared in our article on Hoover Dam tours.
What the pilot adds
Reviews that mention the dam describe the pilot's commentary more often than the sample as a whole: 41.8% of the 196 use words like commentary, facts or history, against 31.0% of all 1,182.
The trade-off: commentary depends on the pilot, and on a canyon flight it is shared with the rest of the route. What reviewers say about it is in our article on pilot commentary.
Common questions
❓ Do helicopter tours from Las Vegas fly over Hoover Dam?
Many Grand Canyon flights do: of 196 reviews that mention the dam, 176 also mention the canyon. There is also a shorter flight over the dam and the Strip. The route is set by the operator; check the listing for the one you book.
❓ Does the helicopter land at Hoover Dam?
The reviews we read describe the dam from the air. A few describe a stop at the dam as part of a longer package; if standing on it matters, make sure the itinerary says so.
❓ Which side should I sit on to see Hoover Dam?
Low-rated reviews describe passengers who missed it from the far side or the middle of the back row. Seats are assigned by weight, so ask at check-in and consider a front seat.
Method and Limits
This article reads 1,182 TripAdvisor reviews of three Las Vegas helicopter operators, Papillon, Grand Canyon Helicopters and Maverick, collected without filtering by rating. Of those, 196 mention Hoover Dam. A separate set collected from low ratings only was read for patterns and is not counted.
Percentages are shares of the 196, or of the 1,182, that mention a theme, found by pattern and then read. The three listings cover different years, so this article does not compare operators. Thirteen reviews filed under the operators' listings that describe a different attraction were set aside.
Quotes are reproduced exactly as written, including the writers' spelling, and each was checked word for word against the stored review. Routes, flight lengths, seating options and prices are set by the operator and change.
