The most useful reviews in this corpus are the ones that contradict themselves, because they are separating two things the booking page treats as one: the place and the product.

Eight reviews in our sample use both phrases in the same text. They are the clearest statement of what the ratings actually measure.
The trade-off: a star rating cannot separate the canyon from the coach, so it gets assigned to whichever annoyed the writer last. Read the sentences, not the stars.
What "not worth it" is pointing at
We read the 68 low-rated reviews that use the phrase. Forty-one name the price of entry, a ticket tier or the Skywalk. Twenty-nine name the day itself — the hours, the bus, the time on site. Exactly one says the view did not live up to it.
That distribution is the article in one line: the disappointment is commercial, not scenic.

The trade-off: you cannot buy the view without buying an access product, because the West Rim is private land and the South Rim is five hours away. The decision is which product, not whether the canyon is worth seeing.
What the happy reviews are rewarding
On the other side, 897 of the 6,573 high-rated reviews say they would go again, call it a must-do or use the phrase bucket list — 13.6%. Among the low-rated ones, seven do.

What they praise is rarely the itinerary. It is the first sight of the canyon, and the person who got them there, which is why the guide dominates the positive reviews of every operator we measured.
The trade-off: a day built around one view has one point of failure — the view is still there in bad weather, but a cancelled tour or a bad guide takes the day with it.
So: who should book it, by the reviews
Three patterns come out of reading both camps.
Book it if you have not seen the canyon. The reviewers who call the day worth it are overwhelmingly first-timers. The ones who say the West Rim is a lesser version are usually comparing it to the South Rim they already know.
Think twice if this is your only free day. The day runs from before dawn to the evening, and it removes the night before and the evening after from your Las Vegas trip.
Decide the add-ons before you go. The regret in this data concentrates on things bought at the gate — a glass walkway, a photo package, a meal in a queue — not on the decision to go.
The trade-off: the reviews cannot tell you whether eleven hours of your holiday is a good price for two hours at a rim. They can tell you that the people who regretted it mostly regretted the extras, and that the ones who loved it almost never mention the schedule.

This article uses the rated reviews of six Las Vegas coach operators plus the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon West listings in our corpus. Percentages are calculated on 7,158 reviews from samples collected without filtering by rating — 6,573 at four or five stars and 452 at one or two.
The TripAdvisor sample for Grand Canyon West is deliberately excluded from every percentage here: it averages 2.36 against the 3.4 that listing publishes, so it is a recent window weighted towards unhappy visitors. Its reviews are quoted where they state something clearly, and the same applies to the reviews collected from low ratings only.
The phrases are found by pattern and then read. "Worth it" is counted only where it is not preceded by a negation, a distinction that matters: an earlier pass that missed it counted "not worth the money" as praise. Verdict phrases are what reviewers volunteered, not answers to a question, so they undercount both satisfaction and regret.
Quotes are reproduced exactly as written, including the writers' spelling, and each was checked word for word against the stored review. Prices, ticket tiers and what each includes are set by the operators and change. Figures describe reviews published up to September 2026.
